Xtra-vision

SOLD

Hilco Streambank is seeking offers to acquire the brand and associated intellectual property assets of celebrated video, film, and music store Xtra-vision.

Background

On behalf of the Seller, Hilco Streambank is actively seeking interested parties with regards to the Xtra-vision brand and associated intellectual property assets.

Founded in 1979, Xtra-vision established itself as one of Ireland’s most iconic brands and a leading film, games, music, tech and merchandise retailer.

At its peak, over 200 Xtra-vision stores were operated across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. US giant Blockbuster managed Xtra-vision for over a decade from 1996 until 2009, opting to retain the Xtra-vision branding on storefronts, citing that the Xtra-vision name was better known and more respected.

Acquired by the Seller in 2013, Xtra-vision expanded steadily, operating 33 branded Xtra-vision stores and establishing the current network of 100 Xtra-vision Xpress self-service DVD and Blu-ray rental machines across Ireland. The network of vending machines offers consumers an array of Blu-Rays, DVDs and video games, available from as little as €2.99. The business also serves customers via the branded Xtra-vision e-commerce website.

During the current unsettled political and economic climate, memories of past times can elicit powerful feelings of security, comfort, and trust for consumers. There is an increasing trend towards using nostalgic themes and references, both in culture and media.[1]  Many companies have adopted nostalgia as a marketing tool by bringing back a popular product or service or reviving an old successful ad campaign.[2]

This opportunity offers a potential buyer the chance to target sentimental shoppers, capitalising on a well-known, much-loved brand, creating a range of commercial opportunities.

Available Assets

Xtra-vision Brand

Founded in 1979, the Xtra-vision brand is well-known and cemented in the minds of consumers, having operated both in Ireland and the UK for over 40 years.

Starting life as a video rental chain, Xtra-vision expanded rapidly and quickly became a household name.

Xtra-vision has continuously reinvented itself over the years, becoming the market leader in Ireland for entertainment. The Xtra-vision brand has endured shifting focus from movies and games to electronics and phones, continuing to offer a market-leading film and game rental business.

Acquired by the Seller in 2013 and subsequently rejuvenated, the Xtra-vision brand evolved, morphing into the vending machine business Xtra-vision Xpress whilst retaining the retro and iconic Xtra-vision name and colour scheme.

The Xtra-vision brand attracts positive and nostalgic press attention from many major Irish media outlets, including the Irish Times, the Irish Post, the Irish Mirror and JOE.ie.

A testament to the strength of the brand and its domestic success, the Xtra-vision brand has stood the test of time.
